What is dystonia?

Dystonia is a movement disorder that results in muscle contractions.  Often painful, these contractions can result in involuntary movement and posture, as well as repetitive movements.

Where can dystonia occur?

Dystonia can occur in a focused area of the body or be generalized.  Common areas impacted by dystonia include:

  • neck
  • voice box
  • hands and limbs
  • jaw, lips or tongue

 

What causes dystonia?

No one really knows what causes dystonia, that said it can occur as a symptom of another medical issue such as:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Wilson’s disease
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Stroke
  • Reactions to certain medications or heavy metal poisoning
  • And more
